A PARLIAMENTARY candidate has accused the BBC of censoring him for a second time after not being invited to a hustings on Radio Oxford.

The incident came two days after a woman had to be talked down from a balcony at hustings in Abingdon.

Oxford East independent parliamentary candidate Chaka Artwell has accused the BBC of “political apartheid” by not including him in a hustings yesterday, hosted by BBC Radio Oxford in Templars Square Shopping Centre in Cowley.

After the Barton resident accused the BBC of being “undemocratic”, the hustings was postponed until further notice.

In January, Mr Artwell was supposed to be interviewed by BBC South, but the interview was cancelled because he was wearing a golly doll on his lapel.

The Oxford East hustings, which would have been aired today, included constituency candidates from UKIP, the Green Party, Labour, the Conservatives and the Lib Dems.

But Mr Artwell – and three other candidates from the Monster Raving Loony Party, Trade Unionise & Socialist Coalition and The Socialist Party of Great Britain – were excluded from the event.

DJ Mr Artwell said: “It’s a political apartheid that the people of Oxford should not stand for. The people have a right to hear my voice and my policies.”

Labour parliamentary candidate Andrew Smith, said: “I think he should be allowed to take part, and the same for other candidates.”

BBC spokeswoman Meera Hindocha said: “Discussions are under way to rearrange this debate and we are inviting candidates in line with the BBC election guidelines, but we will also ensure audiences are aware of other candidates.”

On Tuesday night at a hustings hosted in Abingdon’s Guildhall, a woman had to be talked down from a balcony.

Witnesses said shortly after the hustings began, at about 7.30pm, the woman attempted to climb over the edge of the balcony that overlooks the foyer inside the building.

The woman, thought to be in her 40s, reportedly had been taken into the care of emergency services at 8pm.

Election candidates attending the hustings event said they had been unaware of the incident as it unfolded.

Nicola Blackwood, the Conservative parliamentary candidate, said: “It is clearly shocking and I am relieved to hear she was not injured in any way.”
