ST GILES Fair in Oxford appeals to people of all ages, but it is the young who get most enjoyment out of the big wheel, the waltzers and the other stomach-churning rides.

Not to mention, of course, the treats that come at the end – the candy floss, ice cream and toffee apples.

In Picture 1, Sarah Coggins and Clare Smith, both 12, seem determined to emerge as top drivers on the ever-popular dodgems in 1983, while in Picture 2, four-year-old Alan Daye no doubt took on the role of Batman as he took charge of the Batmobile in 1981.

Picture 3 shows Lisa Walls, of Donnington, in pensive mood as she holds on tightly on the galloping horses, also in 1981.

Another scene from 1981, in Picture 4, shows it was candy floss time for, left to right, Nicki Davies, 21, Sarah Buckett, 21, and Karen Duff, 22.

The fair in 1990 had all the usual attractions, including the dodgems, which proved popular with Ruth Eynon, 15, left, and Anna Parkin, 14, both from Oxford, in Picture 5.

However, that year, at least two young fairgoers in Picture 6, whose names we don’t know, appeared to be having doubts about whether to go on one of the sky-high rides.

“Perhaps we won’t go on that one,” they seem to be saying.
