CRISP corners on cotton sheets earned these cadets a prize for neatness.

Putting up their feet for a post-contest rest, 14-year-old Dawn Coppock (left) and 12-year-old Paula Matthews took home trophies after a bed-making and nursing competition.

The two St John Ambulance Brigade cadets are pictured here in November 1979, proudly wearing their nursing caps and gowns as they test the comfort of their bedding creation.

They clasp a silver cup and shield that boast their unbeatable skills for preparing a welcoming hospital bed.

The girls advised the Oxford Mail that the key was smooth, well-tucked sheets with no corners on display.

St John Ambulance still runs youth programmes including cadets, teaching youngsters about first aid and offering volunteering positions within the community.
