PUPILS at the village school were in danger of being hit by flying stones in 1972. Council workmen had resurfaced the road with stone chippings, many of which were being thrown up on to the pavements by passing traffic. More than 30 children had been hit on their way to and from school. A council spokesman blamed drivers for ignoring warning signs and going too fast.
The middle picture, dating from 1968, wasn’t taken at the seaside, but much nearer home. The River Thames through the village offered its own mini beach – and villagers were happy to take advantage when the sun shone.
A search of the village by school pupils for curios in 1973 produced some unexpected finds, including a 16th century German calculator, ancient coins and a pair of antique scissors. Four children are seen looking at some of the items in the bottom picture.
