We continue to take exams without much meditation about whether the, say, Oxford University three-hour paper is the best form of assessment.
I have to say I would prefer a radical alternative, one in which students frame the questions, subject to faculty review and complete each exam, in a week, on a take-home, open book, open discussion basis.
The existing system has held sway since time immemorial. Could we make a reasoned change which may benefit pupils and tutors alike?
