New words have been published for the first time in the latest quarterly update of the online version of the Oxford English Dictionary.

Oxford Dictionaries Online is run by Oxford University Press and staff say social media is continuing to shape the language, with e-learning and ethical hacker among the latest words and phrases to make their dictionary debut.

Hosepipe ban and micro pig are also included in the new round-up.

Head of Online Dictionaries Glynnis Keir said: “The rich variety of new words from all manner of sources – popular culture, science, technology and politics – is striking in this update.”
