Sir – The parking restrictions recently imposed in Witney High Street are a good example of authority sitting on high at their desk and deciding how they might tidy up the street a bit and allow traffic to flow through without stopping.

I would guess they don’t even know the customs and rhythms of living in our lovely market town, where we enjoy the survival of High Street shopping against the odds.

We don’t want traffic zooming through the street – we want it to stop and hesitate and join in with High Street living.

A particular group have been badly affected by this change, blue badge holders. There is excellent parking at the Woolgate Centre and Marriotts Walks but both are too far away for many manual wheelchair users and people who have health problems which restrict their walking.

Disabled people have a right to access their High Street and to stop them so doing is an abuse of their rights. This insensitive action fails to understand the daily experience of being disabled.

Like my need to access Dentons, the cycle shop, who have looked after my wheelchair tyres for many years; my optician who looks after my visual health; the Oxfam bookshop, with a wealth of books at a low cost; the post office who look after my parcels for friends overseas; and finally Lloydspharmacy, who make sure I have essential medication.

Witney High Street is the original heart of the town and I want and need to use it. Please email me if you want to fight this action at alex@mary76ellen.plus.com .
