Sir – I read with interest about the county council’s decision to stop parking in Witney High Street, including blue badge holders. I am the first to agree something needed to be done about the congestion caused by vehicles parked on the double yellow lines.

But the comment by the county council that there are disabled spaces in nearby car parks misses the point.

Some disabled people can only manage to walk short distances. To get from the car parks to the town centre is impossible for many, my daughter included, who has a blue badge.

I spoke ages ago with a town councillor about this and suggested the three spaces outside Clarke’s shoeshop be made disabled-only, together with another outside Boots in High Street, also two or three spaces near the Methodist Church and the other end of the town by Barclays bank.

This would accommodate people with Blue Badges who can’t walk far. Those of us who are agile would be forced to use the town centre car parks – and rightly so.

Perhaps someone with a little insight into the difficulties the less mobile members of our community have could advise the county council on what is needed when disabled. Obviously they never got advice this time.
