A DECISION to award a 30-year £275m incinerator contract to waste firm FCC Environment, formerly WRG, faces new scrutiny.

A group of Buckinghamshire County councillors, led by Michael Brand, have called the decision in for re-examination by a scrutiny committee.

The firm was awarded the contract to build and operate an incinerator at Greatmoor Farm, in Calvert, nine miles from Bicester, last month.

The burner would dispose of 300,000 tonnes of waste a year, but was opposed by people in Bicester over increased traffic .

Up to 84 extra lorries a day will use the A41 around the town to truck waste to the Calvert site in Buckinghamshire.

The overview and scrutiny commissioning committee will decide on Tuesday, September 4, whether to refer the decision back to the council’s cabinet. Committee chairman Lesley Clarke said: “The call-in process ensures proper openness and transparency.

“Whilst the committee has no powers to veto the decision, it can, based on the evidence presented, decide whether there are grounds to refer the decision back to cabinet or full council for further consideration.”

The meeting is 9.30am at Mezzanine Room 1, County Hall, Aylesbury.
