I read with interest Oxfordshire County Council ’s decision to stop parking in Witney High Street, including Blue Badge holders.

I am the first to agree something needed to be done about the congestion caused by vehicles being parked on the double yellow lines.

A comment made by Oxfordshire County Council that there are more than 50 Blue Badge parking spaces in the nearby car parks misses the point. Some disabled people can only manage to walk very short distances.

I spoke ages ago with a Witney town councillor about this and suggested the three spaces outside Clarke’s shoe shop be made disabled only together with another outside Boots chemist in High Street, also two or three disabled only spaces be allocated near the Methodist church and the other end of the town by Barclays bank.

This would accommodate people with Blue Badges who can’t walk far, allowing them to get to whichever end of the town they required. There would be no congestion because those of us who are agile would be forced to use the town centre car parks – and rightly so.
