A HEALTH and fitness club which forms part of Oxford’s Ozone leisure complex has been sold.

The Ozone Health and Fitness Club has been bought for an undisclosed sum by DW Fitness Clubs from the Firoka Group, which is headed up by former Oxford United chairman Firoz Kassam , who still owns the club’s stadium next to the development.

Bosses at DW, which is owned by Dave Whelan, owner of Premier League football team Wigan Athletic, say they are starting working immediately on a £400,000 revamp.

The group exercise studios will be upgraded, while the gym will be made almost twice the size with a dedicated training and weights area.

All equipment will be replaced and a members’ lounge will also be built.

Mr Whelan said: “We are really pleased to purchase Ozone and transform the club into something that will truly surpass expectations.

“I have every confidence this will encourage more individuals to come.”

All 1,700 current Ozone members will have their current memberships honoured and will be able to use all DW Fitness Clubs nationwide.

About ten staff at the club will transfer to the new owner with further recruitment to take place in the near future.
