Sir – Your report (July 26) does not mention the county council’s calculation that the city council’s proposed 40mph speed limit on the A40 past Barton and three or four pedestrian crossings between Headington roundabout and the flyover, would cause four to six accidents every year and that is a dreadful prospect that the city has totally ignored.
The problem has been that the city planning officers are trying to dictate to architects the details of housing layouts and to the county highway engineers the design of a major road carrying 40,000 vehicles every day. Fortunately for generations of future Barton residents, as well as all users of the A40, Inspector Bussey did not accept the pretensions of the city planners.
Mike Gotch, Lib Dem city councillor, Wolvercote
