SOME of Team GB’s Olympic archers will hope to be on target when Oxford hosts the National Archery Finals later this month.

Competitors will battle it out in four categories on Merton Fields at Christ Church Meadow on Sunday, August 26.

It is the first time the Archery GB National Series Finals have been held in the city.

Oxford archer Nichola Simpson, who won a gold at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, said: “This is a really big thing for Oxford.

“When we found out we had got the finals we were ecstatic. It will be right in the heart of Oxford, which will just be fantastic.”

Previous finals were held in Lilleshall, Shropshire, in 2009, Leamington in 2010, and Liverpool last year.

The competition will see the top four archers battle it out for gold in Ladies Recurve, Ladies Compound, Gents Recurve and the Gents Compound.

In a grand final, some archers will shoot 15 arrows at a target 50m away whilst others will shoot up to 70m away with prize money of more than £5,000 for the winners.

Mrs Simpson, who lives in Marston, said: “It is fantastic because everyone is thinking about sport at the moment with the Olympics. Four of the GB Olympic archers are coming to Oxford.”

The four are Larry Godfrey, who made it in the final 16 in London, Alison Williamson, Simon Terry and Adam Ravenscroft.

The Oxford event, held against the backdrop of Christ Church Cathedral, marks the final of four tournaments held over the course of the summer.

Day tickets for entry to the grandstand are available for £8 at oxford-archers.org
