THE memory of a beloved grandfather has spurred eight relatives on to raise money for charity.

On Saturday, eight cousins from Oxfordshire and Cardiff cycled from Oxford to Bournemouth.

They were raising money for Sobell House hospice in memory of their grandfather, George Howlett, on the first anniversary of his death.

Stuart Leech, 23, from Greater Leys, said: “We wanted to raise money for Sobell House – he meant a lot to all his grandchildren.

“He had a rare form of leukaemia and was looked after very well there.”

Mr Howlett, from Blackbird Leys, died on August 5, 2011, at the age of 69.

His grandson said: “We just wanted to raise as much as possible. It is nice to do something together to remember him.”

Mr Leech was joined by relatives Grace Leech, 19, Richard Berry, 28, Andrew Berry, 26, Adam Berry, 24, Mathew Berry, 24, Frank Howlett, 22, and 15-year-old George Howlett.

The cousins cycled 112 miles in nine-and-a-half hours, starting just after 6.30am and finishing at 4.45pm. They walked the bikes on to the beach and jumped straight into the sea to relieve their aching muscles. So far they have raised £500.
