COUNCIL planners have recommended approval for a temporary car park off Marston Road. The application by Oxford City Council is for a 76-space car park on land formerly occupied by Government buildings.

The temporary arrangement would be put be in place as developers work on a 140-bed student housing scheme on the current St Clement’s Car Park, if that wins backing at a west area planning meeting next Wednesday. Council planners have recommended approval for both the flats scheme and makeshift carpark. In a report to members on the temporary car park, a council spokesman said: “The change of use would be for a temporary period only and would not impact unacceptably upon biodiversity.

“Officers have considered carefully all the concerns raised and have come to the view they do not amount individually or collectively to reasons justifying the witholding of planning permission.”

The student homes plans have met with opposition in the area, and concerns have been raised about loss of business for traders.

The east area planning committee will meet at the Town Hall to decide the temporary car park plan next Tuesday at 6pm.
