A SECOND case of the Schmallenberg virus, which can cause illness and birth defects in sheep, goats and cattle has been confirmed in Oxfordshire.

The first case of the virus was discovered in cattle in the county in June.

The Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency yesterday said the latest case had affected sheep but would not say whereabouts the case was.

The virus can cause a drop in milk production, as well as pyrexia and diarrhoea in adult cattle, and late abortion in newborn cattle, sheep and goats.
