SPEED restrictions were introduced on the Rail network yesterday due to the heat — leading to train cancellations and delays for passengers.
Between 2pm and 6pm, speed restrictions were imposed on the line between Oxford and London Paddington because of the hot weather.
There were delays between Oxford and Paddington, and 13 train cancellations between Paddington and Greenford, West London.
Network Rail spokesman Chris Denham said the restrictions were in place on the last section of the journey, between Kensal Green and Paddington, to avoid the rails being damaged after expanding in the heat.
Fellow spokesman Jon Crampton said the restrictions were brought in when the temperature rose above 25C.
He added: “We apologise to passengers for the disruption. Essentially this is a safety issue and the speed restrictions help to reduce the risk of the track buckling during the heat. This is unavoidable – we can’t control the weather.”
