IT IS good news that Oxford City Council has dropped its plan to impose a 40mph speed limit on part of the A40 Northern Bypass (Saturday’s Oxford Mail).

But it is bad news that the inspector at the public inquiry looking into the Barton West housing scheme favours a 50mph speed limit.

Reducing the speed limit on the Northern Bypass will cause more congestion on a road which is part of an important route between Oxford and London.

The bypass is also part of the ring road – which should help to reduce congestion in central Oxford, not increase it.

If there are hold-ups on the Northern Bypass, motorists are more likely to go through Headington, Marston, Elsfield and other neighbouring areas, causing more congestion there.

I hope the council also drops its proposals for pedestrian crossings across the A40 as part of the proposed development.

These would be dangerous and would cause even more delays on this vital road.

Your Comment is absolutely right to say that the city council should install bridges over the A40.

Underpasses would also be acceptable.

One suspects that the city council is trying to do things on the cheap, with no regard for the safety of pedestrians or the smooth flow of traffic .
