POLICE cordoned off a section of Oxford’s Cornmarket Street yesterday to talk a man down from the top of a church tower.

Street traders said patrol cars cordoned off the area around St Michael at the North Gate church about 4.50pm after a young man threatened to jump.

A Thames Valley Police spokesman said: “I can confirm we attended an incident at the tower which concluded about 6.10pm.

“The man was brought down from the top of the tower and is fine.”

Pavement artist Carol Powell, 55 said: “The man climbed to the top of the tower and dangled his feet over the edge and said he was going to jump.

“We were all told to move back and patrol cars cordoned off the area while police officers talked to him.”
