A former firefighter threw a vacuum cleaner down the stairs at his Oxford home, fracturing his wife’s eye socket in an argument.

Keith Fowler then assaulted his step-daughter on September 29 last year.

The 54-year-old, who served in the Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service for 23 years, was sentenced at Oxford Crown Court on Friday after admitting causing actual bodily harm and assault.

William Woodman, defending, said his client had suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder after dealing with difficult incidents during his time in the fire service.

Fowler, whose address was given as Hawksmoor Road, North Oxford, now lives in a caravan at Oxford Rugby Club.

Judge Patrick Eccles gave him a nine-month prison term, suspended for a year, with 200 hours’ unpaid work, a 12-month supervision order, a two-year restraining order and £500 costs.
