What a fantastic achievement for Oxford-born activist Frances O’Grady, who has been named the first woman boss of the Trades Union Congress.

The 52-year-old mum of two has already said of Oxford’s car industry: “We have seen a very mature relationship develop between unions and management whereas perhaps it was a bit Wild West in the ’70s.

“We have the sense of responsibility when deals are being done because everybody realises how important it is to keep manufacturing thriving.”

Quite.

No matter what protests will be aired during her tenure, it is reassuring to have somone who, from the outset at least, seems all too aware of the importance of achieving compromise rather than simply spoiling for a fight.

Unions in this country have a fine and distinguished history, so it is encouraging that the individual chosen to lead this proud movement is also aware of how vital it is to keep our manufacturing base healthy and productive.

Especially during these tough times.
