AN 80-YEAR-OLD driver veered into an oncoming bus and died after a suspected medical episode, an inquest has heard.
Gordon Cordell’s Ford Fusion struck an Oxford Bus Company X3 in Abingdon on February 6.
The retired machine operator, from Otwell Close in the town, died from his injuries shortly afterwards in Oxford’s John Radcliffe Hospital.
Bus driver Jessica Boyd told the inquest at Old County Hall yesterday that she could not see anyone in the front seats of the car when it hit the bus. She agreed with coroner Darren Salter this could indicate Mr Cordell had slumped in his seat.
Mr Cordell, who had been into Wantage with his wife Lilly earlier that morning, was diagnosed with diabetes in 1988 and had a heart bypass operation in 1995.
He suffered two hypo-glycemic incidents in January 2011.
Mr Salter recorded a verdict of accidental death.
