‘What is the use of a book,” thought Alice, “without pictures?” She had a point, and John Tenniel’s illustrations for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland were the perfect complement to Lewis Carroll’s timeless story.
Since the book was published 150 years ago, Alice has been illustrated by numerous artists, and a new art book, Alice Illustrated: 110 Images from the Classic Tales of Lewis Carroll, , edited by Jeff A Menges, allows readers to judge if any subsequent illustrators have matched the appeal of the original.
It features the interpretations of dozens of artists, including Arthur Rackham and Charles Robinson. Editor Jeff Menges discusses the artists and their work, while book collector Mark Burstein shares a bibliophile’s perspective.
Alice’s Day is celebrated in Oxford on Saturday and Sunday, with tea parties, street theatre, storytelling, exhibitions, flamingo croquet and a moonlight stroll.
Venues include the Ashmolean Museum, Blackwell’s bookshop, Bodleian Library, Christ Church, Botanic Garden, Castle Quarter, Museum of Natural History, Museum of Oxford and The Story Museum. 10am-6pm, tel 01865 790050.
