THE eyes of the world may be on London’s Olympic Stadium, but this weekend the people of Osney Island in Oxford put on their own sporting action.

On Saturday the residents staged the Osney Island Olympics which included events such as a three-legged race, an egg and spoon race, a raft race and a duck race.

The games were opened by “the Queen” Karen Brooks and by a lap around the island by torch bearer Lenny Lewis, 11.

He said: “It was really fun and I really liked holding the flaming torch. I thought I would set light to the bunting but it was fine.”

The day, which included a street fayre and live music, culminated in a tug-of-war competition which was won by the west side of the island.

A mile-long race around the island, starting at The Punter was also held which was won by Patrick Lloyd in the under 12s, Barney Shekleton in the 13 to 35 age range and Quentin Sattentau in the 35 to 60 age range.

The event raised more than £300 for the West Oxford Playground Appeal.
