A CAMPAIGN to tackle homelessness on Oxford’s streets is being launched today.

Oxford City Council is trying to make sure no one spends two consecutive nights sleeping rough.

The No Second Night Out campaign has been launched to solve the problem.

Scott Seamons, executive board member for housing, said: “We feel passionate about ending rough sleeping this year, however this can only be achieved with the help of our local partners and the public.

“Officers will be identifying and helping rough sleepers off the streets and either reconnecting them to their own community or providing them with assistance within the city.”

It is being funded from the council’s £1.4m homelessness budget.

The campaign is being rolled out across the nation with the support of umbrella organisation Homeless Link.

Mark McPherson, director of practice and regions at Homeless Link, said: “Every night, someone sleeps rough for the first time. We know that the longer they stay out, the worse their problems can get and the harder they can be to overcome.

“A life on the streets can lead to substance misuse, crime and serious physical or mental health problems.”
