While I agree with the statement by Richard Morton (Oxford Mail ViewPoints, June , ‘How many more people and animals have to be mutilated and killed before dangerous dogs are banned from the ownership of idiots?’, this applies generally to dog owners who act irresponsibly.

Our dog was walking on a lead when he was attacked by a dog off a lead.

During the attack, my husband’s hand was badly bitten and he spent a day in hospital, ending up with 11 stitches.

We had full support of the police and dog warden; the police referred the case to the Crown Prosecution, which, after seven months of investigation, decided to take the case no further, the reason being that the witnesses who gave statements saw the dog attack, but didn’t see the dog sink his teeth in.

The dog went on to attack another dog on a lead a few weeks later.

The police and dog warden were supportive and used the powers that they have, though that power is limited.

The decision came down to the CPS, which didn’t take into consideration the fact that the dog, attacking our dog, caused the incident in the first place.

The police and dog wardens need to be given more power to enable them to act efficiently.
