No major traffic problems were reported on the first Oxford University open day yesterday.

More than 14,000 people are expected to descend on the city for the two-day event, which continues today.

In recent years the event has cause traffic problems around the city.

But this year the university has worked closely with the highways authority Oxfordshire County Council and urged those coming to Oxford to use public transport.

While traffic may have been slower, both Oxford University and Thames Valley Police reported no major traffic jams coming into the city.

University spokesman Julia Paolitto said: “We have gone out of our way to make sure local residents are not inconvenienced.

“Nothing unexpected turned up yesterday.

“It is meant to be the day when the university shows its friendliest face and I think we have achieved that.”
