AS A cyclist myself I totally agree with Frances Lewis (Wednesday’s Oxford Mail ViewPoints)about being forced to abandon the cycle lanes and ride on the footpath to avoid inconsiderate motorists.

The worst ones I find are vans and lorries who stop on the cycle lanes in Abingdon Road to make a delivery to shops.

I have also had the verbal barrage from them when confronting them about it, then receiving further abuse from pedestrians, because I am on the footpath.

Then there are the personal stereo-sporting pedestrians, with earphones hanging from their ears, who straddle between the paint marked cycle and footpaths who cannot make up their minds as to which one to keep to and the mobile texting brigade, who seem to be on another planet, and are totally unaware of you coming up behind them.

I ride with a high-visibility jacket and cycle helmet and have a electric bicycle which is fitted with an electric horn that gives out a piercing high-pitched sound, but they are still unaware of my presence.

I also have had a few close encounters with white van man and bus drivers.

The worst place for this kind of incident is St Aldate’s, opposite the Town Hall.

There are no cycle lanes and buses seem to stay forever stationary, making it a bit uneasy for us cyclists to get past them, along with the delivery vans which try to do a three-point turn in front of you to avoid having to drive into the High Street.

The Botley Road near Oxford railway station is an absolute no-go area for me.

I encountered it once but never again. It is sheer madness – no respect for cyclists at all from car drivers.

So I agree that Pcsos need to look around a bit more and caution inconsiderate persons who make it difficult for the many cyclists who, like me, want to enjoy a safe and stress-free journey.
