STANDARDS at the Campsfield House immigration detention centre in Kidlington are improving, according to a new report.

The Independent Monitoring Board’s 2011 annual report on the Langford Lane centre released this week said it had “a good, stable year on the whole”.

The centre is run by contractor Mitie on behalf of the UK Border Agency.

It was criticised last year over health care and education provision after an inspection carried out before Mitie took over its management that May.

An action plan was put in place to deal with the concerns raised.

The board said the centre and staff offered “a high duty of care and attention to the well-being of detainees, sadly marred by a death in custody in August.”

It added that improvements had been made to education, with a much greater take-up of English lessons.

UK Border Agency spokesman Adam Edwards said: “It’s vital that our facilities are well-run, safe and secure and we are pleased that the board has recognised the improvements in education, health and welfare provision at the centre.”

Nazar Eltahir, of the Campaign to Close Campsfield, said the centre still needed to do more to improve life for its detainees.
