AFTER reading his views on Sunday trading in the Big Issue column on Tuesday, I am in complete agreement with Father Daniel Seward.

I work in the retail myself, and have done so for more than 35 years and more.

Why do we need to open up shops at all on a Sunday? It does take families away from spending quality time together.

Most large supermarkets are open 24 hours a day now and they sell everything – food, electricals, furniture, and goods for the tourist trade.

So why do we need to open on Sundays at all? The excuses are we don’t have time to do our shopping during the week because of work.

I have worked, with a family to bring up as well, and managed to do it even before the shops opened for 24 hours and on Sundays. I did my weekly or monthly shop on a day off, along with all the other things I had to catch up with.

It’s about time we started spending quality time with our families on Sundays.

After all, that’s what this Government keeps advising us to do, saying that’s why our youth of today (not all) are behaving as they do – because parents are always working and spending no time with them.

I have never agreed with Sunday or bank holiday trading and I am certainly not old fashioned.

I just want to spend qualIty time with my husband and extended family – my two sons and their partners. Sunday is one day which we can do this.

Please do not take this away by getting stores to open longer hours on Sunday.

Please remember that most of us who work in retail have no option as it’s written into contracts to work Sundays and bank holidays.
