‘If you don’t enjoy this then you’re officially the curmudgeon of the millennium,” declared The Scotsman after Out of the Blue wowed the Edinburgh fringe audiences. Having just seen a sneak preview of the group’s forthcoming concerts at the New Theatre, I can see exactly what they mean.

This all-male a cappella group, made up of students from Oxford and Brookes universities, is stunningly good, with some wonderfully harmonious singing accompanied by hugely entertaining and slick choreography. Their biggest claim to fame so far is making it to the semi-finals of Britain’s Got Talent, where they were a knockout with the judges and the audiences, but somehow still managed to get voted off.

Last week, at Magdalen College auditorium, in front of an invited audience, they performed with immense energy and pizzazz, turning on the charm from the moment they stepped on the stage.

Fun is one of the main ingredients of this musical cocktail, and it is impossible not to be completely captivated by the group’s endearingly obvious enjoyment and sheer exhilaration at everything they do.

Their repertoire is a pleasingly entertaining journey through the pop music repertoire, with hits such as Don’t You Love Me Baby (a gloriously energetic opener) and I Heard it Through the Grapevine, among others — although, with entertainers like these, you almost don’t care what they are singing because they tackle everything with such aplomb that every song hits the spot. There are creative arrangements, too, with songs adapted for the 12 voices, and with some smartly executed vocal percussion.

What’s particularly wonderful is that most of the group’s profits go to charity, including Oxfordshire cancer charity UCARE, the Oxford-based Helen and Douglas House, and the Cathedral Archer Project, a homelessness charity in Sheffield.

If you’re looking for fun, engaging and heart-warming entertaining, Out of the Blue ticks all the boxes. I guarantee they will put a smile on your face, and have you tapping your feet all the way through. They deserve to have the New Theatre packed on Monday and Tuesday — and hopefully not a curmudgeon in sight.
