Sir – We have heard much about how Bank Holidays are bad for the economy because they lead to lost production.

This seems to me yet another example of wrongly blaming the workers for our economic ills. In fact, not only does extra spending on Bank Holidays boost the economy but it seems to me that so many workers don’t get the benefit at all.

This two-day Bank Holiday all the shops and cafes seem to be open and well-staffed, the daily newspapers are on the shelves, my optician has produced a new pair of glasses for me and the council workers have collected my bins.

Although I am lucky enough to have the benefit of a couple of days off work, my partner has only been able to do so by using up two days of his annual leave entitlement and my daughter is working as normal in her public sector job.

Enhanced pay for Bank Holiday work also seems a thing of the past. So instead of blaming the workers let us show our appreciation for the people who keep the wheels of our economy turning no matter what.
