A DECISION to ban a right turn near Oxford’s Botley interchange could prompt a McDonald’s to become a drive-through restaurant, according to residents.

County council cabinet member for transport Rodney Rose is tomorrow expected to approve the decision to stop drivers turning right from North Hinksey Lane on to West Way.

Residents living near McDonald’s in West Way have told the county council they are concerned the redesign of the West Way junction will “facilitate the introduction of a drive-through facility at the adjacent McDonald’s”.

Consultation with the public finished on May 11 and highways officers recommend Mr Rose approves the no right turn.

He said: “We will listen very carefully to the views of residents and their main concern appears to be that McDonald’s could decide to try to turn their restaurant into a drive-through. But if they did decide to do that, they would have to make a separate planning application.

“This is a way of improving traffic flow, particularly in the afternoon peak, when lots of drivers are heading out of Oxford.

“If this change goes ahead, then drivers turning out of North Hinksey Lane can turn left, go around the Botley interchange and then head into Oxford.”

The decision will be made at a meeting at County Hall at 10am.
