Police have reminded cyclists of the importance of protecting their bikes.

They held a free bike marking event from a mobile police station in Broad Street.

It involved engraving the owner’s postcode into the frame of the bicycle and attaching a tamper-proof sticker to it.

People were also given a log book to register their bike’s details.

Pcso Pete Brownridge, pictured centre, with Pcso Jon Clements and Kate Williamson, said: “More than 130,000 bikes are stolen in the UK each year.

“Having a bike that is security marked makes it easier for the police to identify and speeds up the process for returning it to its owner.”

As well as marking the bikes on Saturday, officers were also offering advice on cycle safety and enforcement.
