JESTERS Tom and Freddie Fletcher were among hundreds of pupils from Witney primary schools who got a taste of tradition.

More than 400 pupils from The Batt Primary School and St Mary’s Infant School danced around a May Pole in Church Green yesterday.

The tradition has been going on in the town for more than 100 years.

The event began by crowning Elisha Raschke, 11, as the May Queen, then the children danced to entertain her.

Some of the boys wore Union Jack sashes to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

St Mary’s pupil Maisie Cooke, five, said: “I really enjoyed the dancing and it was fun to dance with the other children.

“It is good to carry on the tradition because it helps children learn how to dance and things.”

Her mum Mel, 40, from Witney, said: “It was all lovely and I think the traditions are important to keep up.

“The children really enjoyed it and they got a great sense of community with the two schools working together.”

The Batt Primary School headteacher Chris Payne added: “It was traditional May dancing to celebrate the beginning of spring.

“I think it is important that the children value their past and can then pass on that experience into their futures. The children loved it.”
