A MAN accused of murdering his wife and mother-in-law claimed in court he was the one being attacked.

Ensar Gol took to the witness stand at Oxford Crown Court yesterday to speak in his own defence.

Gol denies murdering 28-year-old wife Michala and her mother Julie Sahin, 50, and attempting to murder 20-year-old family friend Casey Wilson at his home in Ireton Court, Thame.

The defendant told the court he did not even realise he had picked up the weapon, during the incident on September 4.

The 22-year-old said he had drunk a 700ml bottle of vodka, “some wine” and “two or three glasses” of whisky leading up to the incident in the early hours of the morning.

Gol said he returned to the house at about 1.30am and was opening the door to the bedroom where his wife and their daughter were sleeping when Mrs Sahin came up the stairs holding a knife.

Claiming his mother-in-law swore repeatedly at him, the defendant told the court: “Julie said get out from her house.

“She said get out, she had a knife in her right hand.”

The Turkish national said he was then attacked by Mrs Sahin and his wife who was awoken by the scuffle.

He told jurors he knew from his 15 months in the Turkish Army that Mrs Sahin, who he said had never liked him, was serious.

Asked what he was thinking at the time, he replied: “She’s going to kill me, she’s gone mad.”

Swishing his arms in the witness box, Gol said: “I just took the knife. Like punch[ing], I just swung everywhere, to Casey, or Michala, or me, I just didn’t know.”

Answering in English with the aid of an interpreter, he added: “When I had knife I didn’t even realise I had a knife in my hand.

“I was just doing [he swung his right arm] everywhere. I didn’t think for one second there can be injuries that serious.”

Asked how he felt now, he replied: “I wish I was die. Nobody deserve to die this badly. They was young. Michala was so young.”

Gol told the court he came to Britain the previous month, having met Michala when she was holidaying in Bodrum in 2007.

Jurors had also heard a statement from Pc Ben Wilson, who was in the back of the police van when Gol was arrested.

He said Gol told him he was Kurdish and started singing before saying of his bloodstained clothes: “Do you know how much these jeans and trainers cost me? Look at them.”

Dc Michael Hooker said Gol did not answer questions in a series of interviews but “made a laugh noise” when charged with Mrs Sahin’s murder.

Gol was due to be cross-examined this morning.

The trial continues.
