I KNOW that reviewers can only relay what has happened to them, but Katherine Macalister’s rather mixed morsels at The One bear no relation to my own experiences of this relatively new gastro pub at the beginning of the Botley Road.

I have already dined there dozens of times, either solo or in small groups, and on one occasion with 180 guests for a wake – when the food, organisation and general courtesy were all superb.

Yes the decor and the menu are eccentric, but kids love the dragons. and if you are in a hurry, the lunch menu is compact and great value.

Students from a local language school use it in some numbers at lunchtime – and they have less than an hour, so Katherine’s point about taking ages to read the menu need not apply.

The staff at The One just could not be more obliging and helpful, so it was disappointing that you printed a picture of the charming restaurant manager Candy without giving her name and title.

Finally, there are not many gastro pubs this close to central Oxford with both a garden and a car park.
