FIREFIGHTERS have told how they tried to save two men killed when their car crashed into a house and burst into flame.

Thames Valley Police is appealing for witnesses after the single-vehicle accident happened at about 3.40am, on the A4130 near Hadden Hill golf club.

A blue Peugeot 306 was travelling from the direction of Wallingford towards Didcot when it crashed into a boundary brick wall of a house and caught fire.

A spokesman for Thames Valley Police said the two men died at the scene, and they have not yet been identified. The residents of the house were not injured.

South Central Ambulance spokesman James Keating-Wilkes said: “The car left the road, hit a wall and burst into flames.

“Two adults in the car were declared dead at the scene.”

Oxfordshire Fire Service’s Bob Speakman was incident commander in charge of 10 firefighters from Didcot who attended the crash.

He said: “The car came over Hadden Hill but the driver lost control and hit a wall side on and that has caused the car to burst into flames.

“We arrived within seven minutes of getting the call and the car was engulfed in flames.

“We put the fire out and removed the roof and the doors of the vehicle.

“The wall had a hole in it so there must have been a considerable impact.

“In my opinion, it is unlikely that the two men would have survived the impact, but the police investigation is continuing.

“Our thoughts are now with the families following this tragic accident.”

The road was closed between the junction with Long Wittenham Road and the B4016 while police conducted an accident investigation and was reopened at about 9am.

A spokesman for Thames Valley Police said officers were currently working to identify the casualties.

Anyone with information should contact police on the inquiry line 101.
