Witney Mills cricket team had clearly tasted success when this picture was taken.

They posed proudly for the cameraman, with the gleaming trophy in front of them.

But what was the trophy and when did they win it?

Joyce Croft, who sent in the picture, has a quick answer to the second question: “It was long ago!”

Members she recalls include Jack Smith, Ray Calcutt and two men called Upstone and Hawker. Her husband Gilbert, who worked at Smith’s blanket factory at Witney for 41 years, ending as production manager, was a prominent figure on the Witney sporting scene. His daughter, Ros Derwin, of Kidlington, writes: “He supported Witney Football Club (and Swindon Town) and was the club secretary in the early 1950s.

“But his real passion was cricket and as well as being secretary to Witney Mills, he was an umpire for the club for many years.”
