Oxford Operatic Society returns to the New Theatre from Tuesday with a sparkling production of the musical Thoroughly Modern Millie, based on the 1967 hit film starring Julie Andrews and featuring music by Jeanine Tesori, lyrics by Dick Scanlan and a book by Richard Morris and Scanlan.
Set in New York City in 1922 — the dawn of the Roaring Twenties — the show tells the story of Millie Dillmount, who has moved to the city in search of a new life for herself. It’s a New York, full of intrigue and jazz — a time when women were entering the workforce and the rules of love and social behaviour were changing forever.
The stage version includes a full score of new songs and bright dance numbers.
Directed by Ann Robson, the show stars Hannah Veale as Millie, Alex Williams as Jimmy Smith, and Chilina Madon as the villainous and sinister Mrs Meers.
Thoroughly Modern Millie plays at the New Theatre from Tuesday until Saturday. Tickets are available from the New Theatre box office on George Street, by ringing 0844 871 3020 or by visiting the website at www.atgtickets.com/oxford
