A GANG of thieves have admitted stealing thousands of pounds of copper cable in Oxford.

Eight men appeared at Oxford Magistrates’ Court and pleaded guilty to taking the materials from the National Grid site in Blackberry Lane near Greater Leys.

The theft took place on Sunday, April 1.

All eight defendants admitted one count of theft when they appeared at the court last Tuesday.

They are all from Oldbury in the West Midlands.

Before the court were Nita Baicu, 20; Mirhai Cirstea, 22; Vasile Filisan, 24; Nicolae Floricel, 26; Stefan Preda, 28; Marian Tanase, 21, and Vasile Preda, 20, all of Vicarage Road.

The other group member was Florin Constantin, 22, from Richmond Hill.

He was bailed ahead of sentencing while the other seven were remanded in custody.

Sentencing will take place at Oxford Crown Court on Monday, April 30.
