AFTER a hard-fought battle for survival, Summertown Library now has a new readers’ corner and a bright future.
The library was one of those earmarked for closure until a vigorous campaign was mounted by supporters, who said they were prepared to buy the site.
It was saved from closure last year when Oxfordshire County Council halted plans to cut 20 branches by using volunteers.
The Friends of Summertown Library donated chairs and wheeled bookcases for the corner, to create a space where book readings and events can be held and self-service consoles have now replaced the checkout desk for books.
Marcus Ferrar, chairman of the Friends, pictured right, with library manager Nicola Hobson, left, and local councillor Jean Fooks, said: “Last year we were a militant campaigning group to stop the library’s closure. Now the library not only has had a reprieve but has gone through a makeover.
“We’ve managed to make sure it not only still exists but to make sure it’s significantly better than before.”
