A CLUB at the centre of police concerns over fights has been allowed to keep serving bottled beer so as not to put off “high-end” customers.

The Chapel in Banbury will still be able to serve five premium brands, despite police concerns over bottle attacks.

Thames Valley Police sought a review of the Horsefair club’s licence and last week supported new conditions to try to reduce attacks.

Club solicitor Jonathan Smith accepted use of plastic glasses except for five premium beer brands and sparkling wines.

He told a Cherwell District Council’s licensing sub-committee: “To put one of those into a polycarbonate, you are going to lose, to be frank, the higher end customers.”

Staff collected empty bottles as a priority, he said.

Police acted following 104 recorded incidents in about two years including a fight last September when a bottle was smashed over a clubber’s head.

A number of extra conditions on the licence were agreed by councillors on Thursday.

The last entry will be cut from 3am to 2am for nights that run to 4am from March 15.

A CCTV camera will film the dance floor and maximum admission numbers will be cut from 410 to 387. The sound system will be turned down to help door staff hear better and more of them will be on duty.

Police licensing officer Laura Morris said: “Putting the conditions together as a whole will have a big impact.”
