OXFORDSHIRE'S councils spent more than £4m on 426 CCTV cameras between 2007 and 2011, new figures have shown.

Civil liberties campaign group Big Brother Watch used Freedom of Information legislation to obtain the figures.

The county council spent £418,614 on 193 cameras; Oxford City Council £613,650 on 53 cameras; West Oxfordshire District Council £431,037 on 37 cameras; South Oxfordshire District Council £429,158 on 62 cameras; Vale of White Horse District Council £1,371,121 on 31 cameras; and Cherwell District Council £780,551 on 50 cameras.
