Abingdon's name could be officially changed back to Abingdon-on-Thames if councillors back the move on Wednesday.
Abingdon Town Council hopes the Vale of White Horse District Council will support the bid, which it believes will help attract more tourists.
A decision will be made at a full district council meeting at 7pm in the Guildhall, Abingdon.
The “on-Thames” was dropped in 1974 because of boundary changes.
