BMW is recalling nearly 30,000 of its Mini Cooper S model because of a fire risk.

During the company’s technical tests a problem with the water pump emerged which, in extreme cases, can lead to the Cowley-made car catching fire.

The cars which are being recalled will have a new pump fitted.

Mini spokesman Graham Biggs said: “If your car is affected you will be contacted by letter."

It is believed to affect cars built from 2006 to 2011 and only one car in the UK is thought to have been affected by this problem.

Worldwide the company is recalling 235,535 cars.

This month BMW revealed that in 2011 the Mini had recorded a best-ever worldwide sales performance, selling 285,060 vehicles.

This was up 21.7 per cent on 2010.
