A RETRO fashion frenzy is set to descend on Summertown as charity Helen & Douglas House brings a pop-up shop to Banbury Road.

Capitalising on the current vogue for all things vintage, charity bosses are gathering in classic examples of 50s fashion, 60s style and 70s chic to fill the rails at its temporary store at the unit left empty by the closure of Hackett’s coffee shop last year.

The shop opens on January 23 and already it promises to be full of Christian Dior blouses and Cath Kidston dresses as well as stacks of vinyl and antique furniture.

Sarah Offill, of Helen & Douglas House, said: “We’ve got quite a lot of stock that we’ve been saving for this and so I guess you could say we’ve picked the cream of the crop for the pop-up shop.”

“There will also be homewares and furniture. It will all be different and there will be something for everyone.”

With stylish shows such as Mad Men and The Hour inspiring shoppers to look for unique period pieces for the homes and wardrobes, Ms Offill said that charity shop customers were no longer just students looking for the cheapest items they can find.

“The age range is much wider than five or 10 years ago,” she said.

Wedding dresses from different eras will also be available, giving a glimpse of a different time.

“We’ve been given wedding dresses from the 1930s through to the 1960s, one of which is an absolutely amazing 1920s beaded gown in keeping with the beaded trend at the moment.”

Also on offer will be restored furniture which volunteers have reworked into new statement pieces.

Now Helen & Douglas is calling on readers to hunt out more of their past fashions to donate, or consider volunteering to help staff the shop. Anyone interested can call the charity on 01865 515383.
