IT’S time to put on your apron and dust off your cake tins.

Inspired by the success of hit BBC1 television programme The Great British Bake Off, an Oxford woman has decided to stage the city’s very own bake-off for charity.

Kate Kellaway-Moore, 23, is planning to hold the event on March 24, raising cash for Oxfam, breast cancer charity Coppa Feel, and the Oxford Rape Crisis Centre.

Miss Kellaway-Moore, who works for Oxfam when not whipping up cupcakes, said: “I’m a big fan of the television programme and from that I came up with the idea.

“I like baking but I wouldn’t say I’m particularly good – I’m hoping other people who come forward are going to be.”

Bakers will be challenged to produce their best bakes in categories including afternoon tea, pie, gluten-free, and bread.

Experts – including cookbook writer Kate Shirazi and Pie Minister managing director John Simon – will conduct a taste test to decide who gets the accolade of ‘star baker’.

Rewards and prizes will be on a baking theme.

Miss Kellaway-Moore, who hopes 500 people will take part, said: “I hope people will be excited to take on the challenge of competing against their local foodies.

“There are so many fantastic local bakers around, so I hope they’ll be keen to put their skills to the test in front of a panel of baking experts and see if they can reign supreme.

“Plus all their brilliant baking will help raise some money for great causes.”

Miss Kellaway-Moore is also putting together a Brilliant Baking Ladies book with recipes from inspiring women who bake, including baking celebrities and local food heroes, to go on sale on the day.

It will include recipes from Holly Bell, runner-up on last year’s Great British Bake Off, Sue McMahon and Sophie Conran.

It is hoped families will come along to the event, which will also include stalls, demonstrations and workshops.

Miss Kellaway-Moore said her baking hero was Witney-raised former model turned TV cook Lorraine Pascale, and her signature bake would be a raspberry meringue pavlova.

Registering for the contest will be via a website which will go live on February 1.
