FOR once I agree with the MP for Witney and his friends. A new high-speed rail link between London and Birmingham (Yesterday’s Oxford Mail) is just the tonic we need.

I do hope the county council will not squander taxpayers’ money on a daft legal challenge.

Of course, it would be better if HS2 went the whole way to Leeds and Manchester. And the project should start sooner than 2014.

But just think of all those jobs and contracts on Oxford’s doorstep, creating sustainable low-carbon transport for the future.

The protesters were right to press for, and get, more tunnelling to preserve the countryside.

The pity is Britain needs many more of these projects to lift itself out of the economic doldrums.

More wind power, better broadband and more low-cost homes would be just the thing, Mr Cameron.
