AS A regular face at fundraising Oxford Mail OX5 Run, Dale Harris knows first-hand the good work it supports.

The 30-year-old’s daughter Mya is regularly treated at Oxford Children’s Hospital, for which the five-mile March run raises cash.

He has taken part in every event since it began in 2003 and has now appeared in a video with his nine-year-old daughter, who has spina bifida, to promote it.

It shows the father-of-three running through Oxford city centre to the Headington hospital while Mya provides a voiceover.

The youngster, who has had more than 20 operations at the hospital, tells viewers: “Thousands of people like my dad have run about 50,000 miles over the years – that is like one person running around the world twice – I think that is amazing.

“He says Oxford Children’s Hospital helps thousands of children every year to get better – children like me.”

Mr Harris, of Normandy Crescent, Cowley, adds: “We have experienced the highs and lows of life, but the hospital has made it very good for us and we have continued to make progress with Mya’s life.”

He told the Oxford Mail: “Mya’s a video star now and I’m sure some viewers will find the film quite moving.”

The Blenheim Palace, Woodstock, event has raised more than £500,000 for equipment and facilities beyond what the NHS can offer.

Mr Harris, who works at Elmer Cotton sports shop in Turl Street, sounded the starting horn with Mya for the 2006 race and has raised about £4,000 over the years.

Last year £60,000 was raised for a mobile intensive care unit and for work to makeover a room in which teenage patients can relax.

The race is organised by the Oxford Mail and sponsored by Oxford recruitment firm Allen Associates, run by Kate and Rob Allen.

Children’s hospital spokesman Penny Hambridge said: “I’m sure Mya’s story in the video will inspire people to take part in the race.”

Oxford Mail promotions manager Jo Coady added: “Dale has always been a big supporter of the OX5 Run so it makes sense for him to be in the video with Mya.

“Hopefully when people see it they will sign up for the run.”

Runners are encouraged to raise at least £100 for the March 25 event.
